NoDa started in 1903 when a group of textile owners saw this green farmland 2 miles to the north of Charlotte and decided to make it a Mill district. The housing complex for mill workers was built along Mercury street.
Till the 50s, North Davidson was the city of textile manufacturing. Many mill workers settled here. But after the great depression, the mills started closing down in the 60s and 70s and NoDa suffered. In the 1990s, North Davidson was reborn with its vacant stores now being converted to art galleries and studios. The conversion of a mill village to an artist town drew attention and NoDa became famous again.
